The Alberta Chief Firearms Office is responsible for administering the federal Canadian Firearms Program to oversee firearms licences and registration, maintain provincial firearms safety training standards, assist and collaborate with law enforcement agencies to help enhance public safety, inform Albertans about firearms safety and advocate for law-abiding firearms owners. 

 

In Canada, firearms are regulated by the Firearms Act and Part III of the Criminal Code. The Government of Alberta administers the Canadian Firearms Program in the province, while the federal government is responsible for creating firearms legislation and regulations in Canada. The Alberta Firearms Act clarifies the role of the Alberta Chief Firearms Office.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Regional Operation Manager, you will provide operational services for the provincial delivery and management of the federal Firearms Act. The services provided enhance public safety through the responsible administration of firearm licensing, serving a wide variety of stakeholders. 

 

You will be responsible for providing clear and concise advice on complex issues and making decisions about license applicants’ and holders’ eligibility to hold a firearms licence. As part of this role, you will encourage compliance through corrective actions, investigate public safety concerns, resolve regulatory issues and determine eligibility for firearms licences, transport and transfers. This will be achieved through a variety of activities, consultations and communications with firearms license holders and applicants. You will liaise with a wide range of organizations such as club and range operators, individual firearms clients, law enforcement agencies, court officers and other government employees. 

 

Additional key responsibilities include: 

  • Leadership and accountability – work in accordance with the Firearms Act, other federal and provincial legislation and the Canadian Firearms Program. 
  • Service delivery excellence – investigate and analyze complex situations and make decisions and recommendations to approve or deny firearms licences. 
  • Operational planning and support – carry out Alberta Chief Firearms Office policies, procedures and strategic priorities to effectively conduct investigations. 
  • Stakeholder and public engagement – respond to general and complex inquiries related to the Canadian Firearms Program. 

 

The position requires a high degree of discretion and confidentiality as well as the ability to work with complex situations under strict timelines.

Qualifications

  • University degree in a related field (Public Administration, Public Policy, etc.). 
  • 4 years of related experience (Senior Investigator, Senior Firearms Officer, etc.).

 

Equivalencies will be considered on a one for one basis. 

 

Assets: 

  • Working experience conducting business/client investigations from start to end. 
  • Working knowledge of the Firearms Act, Part III of the Criminal Code, and the Alberta Firearms Act.

Notes

This posting will be used to fill one, full-time permanent position. This position works Monday to Friday, 36.25 hour per week. 

 

This position requires working with firearms. 

 

The successful candidate will be required to complete Alberta Peace Officer Investigator training and be eligible to obtain a Peace Officer Appointment. They will also be required to obtain and maintain Peace Officer status (Alberta Peace Officer Level 2). 

 

The successful candidate will also be required to obtain and maintain an Enhanced Reliable Security Clearance conducted by the RCMP. Any costs associated with obtaining the required documents/checks as noted or interview travel expenses, will be the responsibility of the candidate. Out-of-province applicants can obtain the required documents/checks from the province they currently reside in.
