Job Description

The Facility Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for the efficient and effective operation of facility maintenance across multiple locations. This includes managing the maintenance team's workload, prioritizing tasks, enforcing safety and rules compliance protocols, conducting regular site visits, optimizing resource allocation, and ensuring all work orders are completed promptly.

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for all facility-related issues, acting on behalf of the Facilities Manager.
  • Manage front-line employees' day-to-day activities and respond to incidents as needed.
  • Lead safety and job briefings in a safety-critical and sensitive environment.
  • Travel to various sites, perform shift work, and be on-call as required.
  • Prioritize the workload of facility maintenance staff, ensuring timely completion of work assignments.
  • Supervise and track daily performance of facility maintenance staff.
  • Assign staff to tasks, develop work schedules, and manage multiple shifts to optimize resource utilization.
  • Manage and maintain systems, including work orders, preventative maintenance, inspection schedules, labor hour projections, and inventory control.
  • Train, coach, and mentor facility staff to work in a safety-first, railway environment.
  • Qualify facility personnel in a railway rules-based environment, ensuring compliance with minimum requirements.
  • Conduct regular facility inspections to identify hazards and maintenance needs, recommending repairs, replacements, upgrades, and associated costs.
  • Oversee maintenance operations across multiple facility sites.
  • Monitor and manage vendors and contractors to ensure timely and quality work completion, including oversight of company vehicles and equipment.
  • Oversee preventative maintenance programs for all building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, security systems, etc.), rolling stock maintenance facilities, and grounds.
  • Respond promptly to emergency maintenance requests, coordinating repairs and escalating critical issues as needed.
  • Manage and track work orders to ensure accurate documentation and timely completion.
  • Source and manage contractors for specialized repairs or projects, ensuring compliance with railway safety regulations and company policies.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable safety regulations, building codes, and railway-specific rules and procedures (e.g., track safety, equipment lockout/tagout).
  • Manage inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and equipment, ensuring adequate stock levels and minimizing downtime.
  • Develop and implement cost-saving measures related to maintenance operations.
  • Schedule and assign work orders, prioritizing emergency repairs and critical maintenance to minimize disruptions to railway operations.
  • Assist with managing team attendance, timekeeping, and vacation schedules.
  • Foster a positive and collaborative team environment, promoting safety consciousness and teamwork.
  • Coordinate with other departments (e.g., rail maintenance, operations, engineering) to schedule maintenance activities and minimize operational impact.
  • Provide regular updates on maintenance activities, project progress, and potential operational impacts.
  • Conduct regular safety inspections, identify potential hazards, and implement corrective actions.

Qualifications

Physical Requirements 

  • Frequent use of computers and other office equipment.
  • Ability to navigate work sites and wear necessary safety equipment in a safety-critical, track environment.
  • Travel to various locations is required, potentially including driving and/or other modes of transportation
  • Ability to lift up to 60 lbs, work in confined spaces and/or at heights.
  • This position requires frequent standing, walking (uneven ground), climbing, working at heights, balancing, stooping, and crouching, often in various weather conditions, and sometimes for extended periods. 

 

Education & Experience

  • Successful completion of a high school (OSSD) diploma or equivalent.
  • At least 2 years of progressive experience in facilities management, and/or Class 1 railway experience. 
  • Minimum of 2 years of management experience in a comparable role, including demonstrated success in leading and managing teams.

 

Required Skills

  • Possession of CROR qualification (safety critical) or ability to acquire and maintain such qualification.
  • Strong understanding of safety regulations, building codes, and railway-specific rules and procedures, with commitment to safety practices.
  • Knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, fire safety, security), rolling stock maintenance facilities, and grounds maintenance.
  • Proficiency in computers, including Microsoft Office Suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), CMMS systems, and data entry.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of conveying complex information to diverse audiences at all organizational levels.
  • Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to guide and support individuals and teams to achieve goals, fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Strong critical thinking, analytical, and decision-making skills, with a proven track record of solving problems quickly and effectively under pressure.
  • Self-starter with the ability to proactively plan tasks and drive execution to achieve goals efficiently.
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking skills to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines in a fast-paced environment, including the ability to prioritize tasks, manage resources, and optimize utilization.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid G driver’s license.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed post-secondary education in Engineering, Management, Architecture, Business, Construction Management, Project Management, Industrial would be an asset.
  • Technical experience with building control systems, environmental systems and audio/visual preferred
