About the Role:
We are hiring a Residential Mortgage Underwriter to support a leading Canadian insurance provider. In this role, you will be responsible for assessing mortgage applications by evaluating income, credit, and property details in accordance with regulatory and institutional lending policies. The ideal candidate brings a strong understanding of residential underwriting, sound credit judgment, and a commitment to delivering accurate and timely decisions in a client-focused environment.
Location: Toronto, ON
Hours: Full-time | Hybrid schedule | Monday to Friday, 9 AM – 5 PM
Key Responsibilities:- Analyze residential mortgage files to determine creditworthiness and risk, ensuring compliance with internal guidelines and industry regulations.
- Review applicant financials, including income verification, credit reports, appraisals, and other supporting documents.
- Make consistent lending decisions and issue approvals, suspensions, or declines with clear, well-documented rationale.
- Communicate conditions and outstanding requirements to stakeholders, ensuring timely follow-up and resolution.
- Identify and escalate exceptions to credit policy or any irregularities requiring further investigation.
- Collaborate with mortgage advisors, brokers, and internal teams to facilitate a smooth, end-to-end underwriting process.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives and support special projects as needed.
- Maintain accurate records and documentation in the underwriting system in compliance with audit standards.
Qualifications:- Post-secondary education in finance, business administration, or a related field.
- Minimum 2 years of mortgage underwriting experience, with a focus on residential lending within a Canadian financial institution.
- Strong knowledge of mortgage adjudication policies, income assessment (including self-employed income), and regulatory guidelines.
- Exceptional attention to detail with a high level of accuracy in document review and data entry.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
- Proficiency with mortgage origination systems and Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel).
