Position: Associate Assignment Editor, CP24, Temporary, Bell Media
Location: 9 Channel Nine Court, Scarborough, Ontario
Salary: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience
Status: Temporary -Full Time (12-month contract)
Hours of Work: 40 hours per week – involves shift work including weekends and evening

 

CP24 – Toronto’s Breaking News – is looking for an experienced Assignment Editor with a deep understanding of how audiences consume news on multiple platforms, and how news is covered in a breaking news environment. The successful candidate will be able to work confidently in a fast-paced environment with a collaborative approach across the CTV News Central Assignment Team.

Responsibilities

  • Generate story ideas and book guests for live interviews
  • Assign a team of reporters and camera staff, and ensure that producers and live-coordinators are kept up to date on changes at all times
  • Identify breaking news and effectively coordinate coverage
  • Develop and curate a wide ranging list of diverse contacts
  • Monitor emergency scanners, social media, internal and external email, and other sources of information, in order to identify news stories
  • Anticipate coverage needs, set up news stories, identify gaps and pro-actively suggest solutions
  • Take part in the daily and long-term planning of news coverage
  • Act as a liaison with our national and Ontario stations, various networks and other news agencies
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • In-depth knowledge of local news and newsmakers in GTHA as well as on the provincial and national levels
  • Experience coordinating breaking news coverage
  • Excellent organizational skill, ability to meet deadlines, self-assign and prioritize duties
  • Ability to juggle competing priorities simultaneously on deadline and come up with a successful strategy to execute a plan
  • Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills
  • Experience working in a newsroom as a team player
  • Working within and upholding the highest professional journalistic standards
  • A broad knowledge of television broadcast and digital news technologies with strong social media skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of iNews
