Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Team Lead Database Administration, the Database Administrator (DBA) position ensures the smooth operations, security, and reliability of an organization's databases. 

 

This position is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of databases, ensuring their performance and security, and developing and implementing backup and recovery procedures. The main objective of this position is to ensure the availability, accuracy, and integrity of the data stored in the databases.
By performing tasks such as reviewing database design and implementing database configuration, performance tuning, and security management, this position helps the organization make the most of their data resources and ensure that critical data is protected. This position plays a key role in developing and maintaining database infrastructure, including storage capacity planning and disaster recovery planning.
 


This position provides direction to a combination of GoA staff, contractors and external service providers. Work performed will utilize IT Incident, Problem, Change, Project, Service and Capacity Management principles to achieve innovative solutions to a variety of complex problem.  

 

Responsibilities: 
Some of the responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

 

  • Managing the day-to-day operations of databases, ensuring their performance and security, and developing and implementing backup and recovery procedures, and ensuring a smooth operation.
  • Ensuring the availability, accuracy, and integrity of the data stored in the databases.
  • Developing and maintaining database infrastructure, including storage capacity planning and disaster recovery planning.
  • Reviewing database design and implementing database configuration, performance tuning, and security management.
  • Assisting and supporting Senior DBA Team Leads in implementation of changes.
  • Collaborating with development teams to integrate new systems and applications with the database.
  • Liaising with branch resources and business to ensure client priorities and issues are dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Creating, implementing and managing new Information management technology (IMT) services which includes business analysis, technical design, implementation, operations, monitoring, troubleshooting and interfacing between IMT systems.
  • Implementing changes to services following proper incident, problem, and change management practices.
  • Overseeing daily operations to ensure compliance with IMT policies and audit requirements.

Qualifications

Required:

  • University degree in a related field such as Computer Science, Information Technology. 
  • Two (2) years of progressively responsible related experience in supporting application infrastructure and/or software development.
  • Experience with project planning and superior technical abilities to manage implementation of services with both software and hardware components.
  • Experience in and a comprehensive understanding of the technical environment and the linkages between systems.
  • Proficiency with database with a strong background in Microsoft SQL Server 2019 & 2022.

 

Equivalencies:

  • A related two-year diploma in related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution and four (4) years related experience; or
  • A related one-year certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution and five (5) years related experience.

 

Assets:

  • ITIL Foundation knowledge.
  • Expertise in utilizing analytical, planning, organization, evaluation and problem-solving skills. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively to staff with a varying degree of systems understanding (none to expert).
  • Experience with Microsoft SQL Azure; with a background in cloud database administration and optimization. 
  • Expertise to detect and repair problems, independently and quickly, is paramount to this position.
  • Strong leadership skills to support project-based work and support in identifying/implementing operational efficiencies.

Notes

Term of Employment: Permanent, Full-time position    

Hours of Work: Monday to Friday, 36.25 hrs/week 
Location: Greater Edmonton or Calgary area (Remote) 

 

This position is eligible for remote work. You must reside in the Greater Edmonton or Greater Calgary area, Alberta to work remotely.

Please note that there is a requirement to attend in-person meetings at the Edmonton office once a month. The travel cost to and from Edmonton will not be covered.
