The Ministry of Indigenous Relations works with Indigenous Communities, the federal government, industry, and other stakeholders to support strong, vibrant, Indigenous Communities and people who are inspired to participate in a prosperous, competitive, and diverse Alberta.
Indigenous Relation's Alberta Indigenous Intern Program (AIIP), which is a government-wide, two-year, paid internship program supporting recent First Nations, Métis, and Inuit post-secondary graduates. This initiative delivers on Key Objective 2.2 in the 2024-2027 IR Business Plan to collaborate with other ministry partners to provide expert advice and support to develop policies, programs, initiatives, and services that reflect Indigenous perspectives and advance reconciliation (82); supports Priority 2.1 of the APS’ Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan to implement a variety of inclusive, flexible, and supportive recruitment approaches that help attract and retain Indigenous peoples (20); and meets Priority 5 of the APS People Strategy 2024-2027 to strengthen career growth opportunities for underrepresented groups (30).
Program Context: Interns with the AIIP will work with host ministries for the first year of internship. In year two of the program, interns will have a six-month community placement with an Indigenous organization or an organizations that serves a high number of Indigenous people. In the last six months of the program, interns will return to host ministry positions. Employment commences the month of September 2025. It is expected that interns work within an office setting, 5 days/week for the first six months of employment. After six months, the interns may be considered for a hybrid work model.
Choosing a path as an Intern within the Alberta Indigenous Intern Program will help prepare you for a future career with the Government of Alberta (GoA) by providing you with valuable work experience within Alberta’s public service, expanding perspective through learning and development opportunities, and building professional networks.
Reporting to a Manager/Supervisor in a host ministry, the Intern is a developmental position that supports you on a career journey within the GoA. Working independently and collaborating with teams, you will gain confidence in your ability to assist in the development and implementation of government programs and policies, carrying out short-term projects or being responsible for a component of a large project/initiative. Your research, analysis and interpretation skills will be enhanced.
In year two, you will work with your host ministry and the AIIP Lead to identify a community placement with an Indigenous Organization, or an organization that serves a high number of Indigenous people. There, you will work on projects that will support skill development such as grant development/implementation, strategic planning, community engagement, and/or policy work. Working within community placements will provide opportunity to build/strengthen collaborative relationships with Indigenous people.

Eligibility Requirements:
The AIIP is open to all First Nations, Métis, and Inuit applicants who:
Graduated from a recognized or legally authorized post-secondary institution within the last two years (January 2023) or will complete the requirements to graduate with a degree, diploma, or post-graduate certificate from a recognized or legally authorized post-secondary institution by September 2025.
To meet the Minimum Recruitment Standards for these positions, you must have:
Program Services 2:
University Degree with no experience or equivalences of directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
Administrative Support 4:
High School diploma and two years of related experience. Equivalences of directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.
First Nation, Métis and Inuit identity will be based on:
1) self-identification, and
2) a letter(s) of reference from a First Nation, Tribal Council, Metis Settlement, Métis District, Métis Nation of Alberta, or an Indigenous business/organization.
