Are you interested in practicing public law on a collaborative team, while working on interesting advisory and litigation matters? Alberta Justice, Legal Services Division, has an opportunity for a lawyer to join the Environmental Law Team.

This is an opportunity to be part of a cohesive team that provides legal services to Alberta Environment and Protected Areas, Alberta Forestry and Parks and Water Infrastructure within Agriculture and Irrigation. The position includes both advisory and administrative tribunal work in the context of the regulation of the environment, public lands and forests in Alberta.

We are looking for a self-motivated individual capable of taking on important responsibilities such as:

• providing advice on relevant legislation
• providing advice on the role and duties of statutory decision-makers
• analyzing legal risks and recommending mitigation strategies
• appearing before the Environmental Appeals Board and the Public Lands Appeal Board
• working with other legal teams to coordinate legal advice and services
• working with clients to advance goals

The ideal candidate will be capable of forming robust client relationships and will possess:

• a strong client focus 
• a demonstrated ability to work in a team environment
• exceptional legal, problem solving and communication skills
• exceptional analytical, research and effective writing skills
• oral and written advocacy experience, including negotiation experience
• familiarity working with legislation

Qualifications

It is required to have a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) or Juris Doctor (JD) degree.

You must be an active member or must have immediate eligibility for full membership with the Law Society of Alberta.

The candidate must have a minimum of 1 year of related advisory and/or litigation experience and demonstrated experience providing strategic legal advice.

For Law degrees obtained outside Canada, proof of accreditation from the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) is required.

Following are the assets for the role:

• Knowledge of environmental law.
• Experience in a regulatory context, including public lands or forestry regulation.
• Experience before the courts or administrative tribunals, including writing submissions and appearing in person.
• Administrative law knowledge.

Hours of work: Monday – Friday, 8:15 am - 4:30 pm (36.25 /week)
