Role Responsibilities

If you have a strong mechanical aptitude and are interested in contributing to water management in the province, then we have an opportunity for you as an Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Supervisor.

The Operations and Maintenance Supervisor manages three technologists, as well as maintenance contractors who assist in ensuring the safe operation and maintenance of the Lethbridge Northern Headworks Canal (LNH), which includes Old Man River Dam and Keho Reservoir.

Primary responsibilities include but not limited to:

  • Ensuring irrigation demands are met as well as ongoing inspections that pro-actively identify deficiencies;
  • Assisting in scheduling and planning maintenance remedies;
  • Establishing and interacting with stakeholders, adjacent landowners and the Piikani Nation;
  • Participating in emergency response during normal and flood operations as they relate to both the LNH System and the Oldman River Dam;
  • Ensuring an assigned standby/on-call rotation for the LNH System is in place each and every operating season.
  • Providing critical operational input into capital rehabilitation projects, engineering investigations, and dam safety assessments.


As the ideal candidate for the O&M Supervisor position within the Water Infrastructure Operations branch, you will possess: 

  • Experience with operation and maintenance of water management infrastructure (dams and canals) or civil infrastructure on a supervisory level
  • Proficiency in monitoring and data management systems such as SCADA – Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition and WISKI – Water Management Information System by Kisters.
  • Ability to supervise staff and contractors, manage performance, and ensure operational compliance in a similar operational or maintenance environment
  • Ability to work on standby rotation and respond to emergencies as needed
  • Capability to participate in flood routing exercises and provide support during hgh-water events.
  • Proficiency in MS 365 applications such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, PowerPoint etc.

Qualifications

Minimum Recruitment Standard for Technologies 5 classification:
Two-year technical diploma in a related field plus four years related experience; or equivalent as described below. 

Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of: 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or 1 year of experience for 1 year of education. 

Related diplomas or degrees including but not limited to the following fields will be considered: 

  • Civil Engineering
  • C.E.T or C. Tech
  • Environmental Management
  • Water Management 


Assets will be considered as follows:  

  • Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S) training or certification
  • 5+ years of supervisory experience with water management infrastructure (dams and canals)
  • Expert level proficiency using specialized systems for monitoring and data management such as SCADA – Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition and WISKI – Water Management Information System by Kisters.

Notes

Division/Branch: Primary Agriculture/ Water Infrastructure Operations

This position works a 40-hour week, Monday to Friday. 

Travel within the community will be necessary, therefore reliable transportation and a valid Class 5 Driver’s License is required.  Further, the incumbent will be required to reside within a 30-minute response time to the Lethbridge Northern Headworks system to provide timely response for emergency callouts during normal and flood operations while on the  standby rotations.

An on call shift (24/7) is required on a rotational basis approximately every fourth week of the operating season normally starting in April and running through October.

This position requires working alone during regular working hours, and while on standby and it may require working in adverse weather conditions.
