Position Overview

Calian is seeking a full-time Medical Laboratory Assistant for the outpatient clinic located on Canadian Forces Base Trenton, Ontario. You will be working 7.5 hours per week day, Monday to Friday starting 7:30 – 4:00pm.

Responsibilities

The required tasks for this occupational group include the following:

  1. Perform venipuncture on adult population
  2. Interact with patients, provide patient instruction, and collect specimens for analysis while maintaining the sample integrity standard
  3. Perform specific lab analysis such as urinalysis and pregnancy tests

enter patient and specimen data into the Laboratory Information System and log sheets

  1. Investigate and locate missing or inaccurate information on requisitions; label and centrifuge all collected samples and separate some samples for external testing
  2. Measure body fluid collection, pour off and send out samples for further testing such as 24 hours urine collection
  3. Process specimens including labelling samples as diagnostic or infectious, packaging samples in accordance with Transport of Dangerous Good (TDG) regulations, preparing waybills for transportation, and data entry. Maintain records according to TDG regulations
  4. Answer telephone inquiries such as testing times, results and nature of samples for patient specimens
  5. Collect and process samples based on the priority of requested testing such as immediate or routine

10.Sort and distribute results, requisitions and specimens via courier and postal services including faxing reports, photocopying requisitions and documents, and preparing transportation buckets

11.Maintain and restock department supply inventory

12.Clean and tidy laboratory work area and all laboratory equipment

13.Language of work English, depending on geographic location

14.Other associated tasks relevant to this occupational group.

Qualifications

All Medical Laboratory Assistant must, as a minimum, possess:

  1. Diploma from a recognized Medical Laboratory Assistant Program
  2. Certificate of registration as a Medical Laboratory Assistant from the Canadian Society of Medical Laboratory Science (CSMLS) or equivalent provincial or territorial organization in the province or territory of practice
  3. Two years of experience working in a clinical laboratory setting and performing phlebotomy
  4. Certificate of Basic Life Support (BLS) for Health Care Provider or equivalent such as Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation/Automated External Defibrillator (CPR/AED) Level C.

Additional Requirements

You will be able to obtain a Government Security Clearance at the Reliability level
