When organizations responsible for public safety—such as the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA)—are selecting candidates for critical roles, they rely on Calian’s trusted network of psychologists to assess psychological suitability and fitness for duty.

In this role, you will:

  • Conduct pre-employment psychological assessments for candidates applying to become CBSA officers, helping ensure they are emotionally and cognitively prepared for high-stakes law enforcement roles.
  • Complete fitness-for-duty evaluations following the non-administrative removal of defensive equipment (e.g., duty firearm), including assessments related to substance use, recovery, and/or sobriety monitoring.
  • Perform return-to-duty assessments for armed officers following a critical incident, on-duty firearm discharge, or traumatic event, ensuring psychological readiness to resume full operational responsibilities.
  • Interpret psychometric tools such as the MMPI-3, 16PF, MCMI-IV, MAST/DAST, and conduct structured clinical interviews to formulate professional opinions and recommendations.
  • Contribute to the overall safety and operational readiness of Canada’s federal agencies through your expert clinical judgment and adherence to best practices in occupational psychological evaluation.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts psychological suitability assessments for Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) officer candidates and armed personnel to determine readiness to carry a duty firearm and other defensive equipment.
  • Reviews psychometric test results (MMPI-3, 16PF, MCMI-IV, MAST, DAST), which are administered by Calian’s psychological services team, and integrates findings into clinical evaluations.
  • Performs structured stress interviews as part of a two-stage assessment process.
  • Evaluates psychological fitness for duty following non-administrative removal of defensive equipment due to mental health concerns, substance use, or exposure to traumatic incidents.
  • Assesses readiness to resume full operational duties following critical incidents or firearm discharge events.
  • Provides professional judgment and recommendations regarding suitability to begin or continue in armed law enforcement roles.
  • Completes standardized assessment reports, and where required, offers feedback to candidates.
  • Collaborates with Calian’s Senior Consulting Psychologist and Chief Psychologist as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Must be able to conduct interviews a private office space.
  • Must be registered psychologist licensed for autonomous practice and in good standing with the Nova Scotia Board of Examiners in Psychology.
  • Doctorate-level applicants must have a minimum of 5 years of experience, including formal training in personality assessment or occupational health psychology.
  • Master’s-level applicants must have a minimum of 10 years of experience, including formal training in personality assessment or occupational health psychology.
  • Must have conducted a minimum of 25 psychological assessments for individuals working in law enforcement or military.
  • Ability to provide a de-identified sample assessment report that clearly demonstrates relevant clinical competencies in suitability or fitness-for-duty evaluations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in psychological personality assessment, including the use of validated psychometric instruments (e.g., MMPI-3, 16PF, MCMI-IV), and conducting structured or semi-structured clinical interviews.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be eligible for and able to obtain and maintain a Reliability-level security clearance in accordance with federal government requirements.
