The Alberta Public Service (APS) is looking for motivated and enthusiastic students interested in developing valuable workplace skills and acquiring insight into public service employment!
The 2025 summer student opportunities intake provides a centralized approach where students, like you, can apply to be considered for various opportunities across the APS. Leaders from across the APS can then easily access and review this pool of potential students to find the best student for their short-term, wage opportunity.
Summer student roles can encompass a great variety of levels of responsibility and type of work. Whether you are completing a certificate program or a doctorate program, we have a variety of opportunities that could be the perfect match for your career development and personal growth. While many student opportunities are located in Edmonton or Calgary, there are opportunities available in areas across the province and we encourage students from across the province to apply. Please note, that you must be located within Alberta during your term to work as a summer student.

Summer employment opportunities typically begin January and will conclude at the end of May. Students are hired for a period of two to four months. Students are offered temporary wage employment by a ministry or department.
A summer student may request leveraging their work term towards a co-op placement related to their educational program. This will be required to be discussed and approved by the hiring manager.

To be eligible for student summer employment, applicants must:
Salary varies based on the classification of the summer student opportunity. The hourly wage is paid on a bi-weekly basis. Summer student wage opportunities start at $20.05, for entry level positions.
Wage (casual) employees receive 11.2% in addition to regular wage earnings, in lieu of benefits and vacation leave.
Summer students are offered wage positions for a period of two to four months in duration. Number of hours of work per week are 36.25 hours.
Final candidates may be required to undergo security screening to be hired into a summer student opportunity.
