Alberta Infrastructure is responsible for leading the development of the provincial Capital Plan, which addresses the provincial infrastructure needs of Alberta’s population that support key social programs and services and economic development.

The Ministry designs, builds, manages, and maintains government-owned and operated facilities, and collaborates with other ministries to ensure that school and hospital infrastructure meet the needs of Alberta’s population. Infrastructure provides accommodation services and manages a large portfolio of owned and leased facilities while maintaining fiscal accountability and optimizing value for Albertans.

Role Responsibilities

Reporting to the Director of the Engineering, Environment & Sustainability Section, this position is the Ministerial Authority on Electrical Engineering as it relates to healthcare facilities and government facilities. This is a specialized engineering position that requires extreme technological depth and develops electrical engineering design standards and guidelines as they relate to the design, construction, maintenance and upgrading of healthcare and government facilities. This position actively participates in projects, providing design expertise for new construction and solving problems in existing facilities and is a "go-to" and a "write the book" position for the GOA and industry for electrical engineering as it relates to healthcare and government facilities. This position is required to maintain current technical and construction knowledge in the field of electrical engineering and to introduce this information to the design process.
 

The primary responsibilities for the Senior Electrical Engineer include, but are not limited to:
 

  • Establishing design standards and policy by developing and maintaining electrical engineering design standards and guidelines.
  • Providing technical advice for the design/renovation of facilities by participating in meetings with stakeholders, reviewing project drawings and specifications, defining electrical engineering criteria, and conducting discussions with consultants and contractors.
  • Investigating electrical engineering problems in existing facilities by conducting on-site investigations and preparing reports, coordinating and reviewing work of consultants engaged in the investigation of such facilities, and identifying recurring problems and implementing appropriate changes in design standards. 
  • Introducing current technology and construction methods into projects and maintaining competency and currency through developing new and innovative methods and systems, and evaluating performance of new projects using established or new methodology.
  • Providing leadership in communicating with stakeholders as it relates to electrical engineering by conducting presentations of lesson learned and updated standards/guidelines, and meeting and discussion with stakeholders to understand their needs.
  • Providing leadership in research projects as by identifying recurring issues, conducting research internally for small projects and managing consultants to conduct large projects.

  • Extensive knowledge and experience related to electrical engineering in healthcare and government facilities.

Qualifications

Minimum recruitment standards outline the minimum education and experience required for appointment to a job classification.

Required:
 

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. 
  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in the consulting engineering field and in the practice of electrical engineering as it relates to building design.
  • Registered and in good standing with APEGA.


Equivalency: Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of:
 

  • 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education.


Assets: 
 

  • Master’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • Strong technical competence in electrical engineering, with respect to design of healthcare and government facilities, and a good working knowledge of other engineering and architectural disciplines related to design.
  • Extensive knowledge of building codes, technical standards, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Ministry requirements.

This position is a Permanent, Full – time role with the standard weekly work hours of 36.25, Monday to Friday (8:15 am – 4:30 pm).
