Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an Intermediate Geotechnical Engineer to join our Geotechnical Business Line in Eastern Canada!

This position offers the opportunity to join an established team to support projects primarily focusing on dams, reservoirs, dykes, spillways and hydropower projects within Canada. In this role you will be responsible for providing technical support to our senior geotechnical engineers in developing cost effective, practical geotechnical engineering designs and construction solutions for our clients. This requires the applicant to have strong technical skills and a willingness to learn. This is an intermediate-level position based primarily in the office with expectations to conduct field visits and assist with field programs as required.

Your Key Responsibilities

The key responsibilities of this role are to focus on the technical planning and execution of geotechnical services related to dams and hydropower projects across Canada such as the following:

  • Supervising field staff working on field work and testing which may include borehole drilling, construction site review, and instrumentation installation and monitoring.

  • Installation and operation of instrumentation including piezometers, inclinometers and other geotechnical instruments.

  • Supporting management of geotechnical investigations, including field coordination with subcontractors, preparation of laboratory testing schedule, documentation of the results, and budget management.

  • Supporting engineering design and assessment of geological and/or geotechnical systems involving slope stability and settlement analysis, internal erosion assessment, monitoring programs, and others.

  • Other general field and office related duties as required.

  • Building and maintaining your knowledge of relevant Canadian and global dam standards, industry guidelines and current industry practices

  • Continual learning and increased proficiency with civil and geotechnical software which could include CIVIL3D, GeoStudio TM , LeapFrog, Rocscience, FLAC® and/or Plaxis.

  • Actively participate in Stantec’s risk management and quality procedures.

  • Lead by example for Stantec’s Health and Safety Framework.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • The primary capabilities and credentials that will allow you to be successful in this role include:

  • A self-starter who enjoys working in a team environment.

  • Strong technical skill set. Experience with instrumentation installation, geotechnical investigations, slope stability analysis, and numerical modelling are considered assets.

  • Ability to participate and collaborate in a project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought.

  • Strong oral and written communication skills.

  • Valid Driver’s License.

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of a Bachelor degree in Civil/Geological Engineering from a recognized university. Post-graduate degree in Geotechnical Engineering is preferred.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in geotechnical engineering is required.

  • Professional Engineer in good standing with provincial association or the ability to obtain the professional designation.

Typical office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work, when required, may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
