Description

Our GTHA and Waterloo architectural team is a key contributor to our diverse industrial portfolio at Stantec. This position reports to the BC Operations Leader (BCOL) for the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) and will collaborate with the broader principal-led leadership team. We are looking for someone to lead, manage, inspire, engage and grow a culturally strong and high performing industrial business in Ontario.

Our GTHA /Waterloo/North American industrial clients come from manufacturing, Automotive, Aerospace, food & beverage, warehousing / distribution / logistics, Chemicals and Polymers, transit, municipal, power & energy, science & technology, and national defense sectors.

Some of our industrial project types include new construction and renovation of:

  • Vehicle maintenance facilities for light rail, heavy rail, bus, fleet, mining, other transit facilities etc.

  • Warehouses, distribution centres, fulfillment centres, and parcel sortation facilities

  • Component manufacturing and assembly facilities

  • Manufacturing facilities for light and heavy industry

  • Food processing facilities

  • Energy transmission stations and supporting buildings

  • Aircraft hangars

  • Staff support facilities for the above facility types

  • Other light industrial facility project

Your Opportunity

Our Toronto/Waterloo office is seeking an intern architect to join our multidisciplinary team.

You will work on tasks under the guidance of a Senior Designer or Architect in our Industrial Studio. This is an intermediate level intern Architect design role. You will work as part of a team, and will be responsible for production of technical drawings, from initial planning to design and construction for Industrial projects. The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of building design concepts and building systems, have solid technical abilities, be a skilled problem solver with attention to detail, and strong communication skills.

You must have successfully completed a related architectural diploma program from an accredited post-secondary institution. The individual will be a self-starter and expected to work collaboratively on projects as a member of an interdisciplinary design team.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Works directly with Design/Project Architects in development of designs.

  • Supports Design/Project Architects in development of material for presentations.

  • Assists in the development of a design through sketches, physical models, electronic models, diagrams, massing studies, and other visual formats.

  • Utilizes BIM technologies in development of three dimensional models of buildings and their components.

  • Participates in design critiques and pin-ups.

  • Interprets and applies building codes and requirements of other regulatory agencies.

  • Ability to conduct space planning, block planning, and adjacencies in coordination with building program.

  • Prepares and revises documentation in various architectural phases including site plans, floor plans, building elevations, building sections, and details.

  • Coordinates building systems (structural, mechanical, electrical, Industrial, etc.) to ensure compatibility with the design intent.

  • Assists in the evaluation and selection of building systems and materials.

  • Attends project coordination and meetings with internal team members and/or external consultants.

  • Participates in value engineering and basic cost estimating.

  • Implements sustainable design principles into the building design and surrounding environment.

  • Assists in site analysis, research of concept, benchmarks, typology, and precedents.

Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials

  • Basic knowledge and application of accessibility codes and applicable building codes.

  • Basic knowledge of building construction systems, means and methods, materials, and industry associated standards is expected.

  • Basic understanding of all phases of architectural document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.

  • Ability to conduct space planning, block planning, and adjacencies in coordination with building program.

  • To develop floor plans, wall sections, and details.

  • To check own work for accuracy and completeness and manage time to meet project budget and schedule.

  • To participate and collaborate in a project team setting through all phases of architectural document production.

  • To engage in creative and critical thought. To hand sketch and communicate concepts and ideas to others effectively.

  • To interpret sketches, drawings, building program and other similar material. To communicate abstract ideas (verbal/written)

  • Requires understanding of Microsoft Office Suite, Revit, AutoCAD; Prefer experience with Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUP, Newforma,

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture or related field.

  • Minimum of 5 years of experience.

  • LEED Green Associate or LEED AP preferred.

  • Strong REVIT capabilities are a requirement.

  • CANADA: Registration within Provincial/Territorial Association of Architects as an Intern Architect is preferred.

Typical hybrid office environment working with computers and remaining sedentary for long periods of time. Field work may include exposure to the elements including inclement weather.
