The Sheriffs Branch is dedicated to promoting safe and resilient communities, performing a wide range of activities in collaboration with other law enforcement and policing partners in Alberta. In addition to the office of the Chief, there are five directorates within the Branch: Court Security Services (CSS), Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Services (FWES), Protection, Communication and Investigation Services (PCIS), Operational Support Services (OSS), and Sheriff Highway Patrol Services (SHPS).

Role Responsibilities

The Interdiction Patrol Sergeant is directly responsible for delivering a complex and a highly specialized law enforcement program dedicated to the interception and prevention of prohibited persons, firearms, and illegal substances. The Sergeant ensures a high level of coordination with stakeholders and partners with interests in the program, including other ministries, The Royal Canadian Mounted Police, municipal police agencies, integrated law enforcement bodies, federal and provincial enforcement agencies.

Reporting to the Specialized Programs Manager, Sheriff Highway Patrol Services (SHPS), the Sergeant must have considerable knowledge and expertise in the field of criminal interdiction investigations involving offences related to the Criminal Code, including search and seizure law in Canada.

The Sergeant will be a subject matter resource for the Sheriffs Branch in field of drug, firearms, and human trafficking interdiction. They are required to work with external stakeholders and conduct research to ensure the interdiction program remains current with emerging case law and investigative standards and techniques. This position will be required to participate in various working groups and/or committees to provide expertise on related topics. Working independently with minimum supervision and managing tight timelines by prioritizing work is critical to the success of this position.

  • Ability to interpret and apply legislative/regulatory training requirements to accreditation criteria and development of applicable training programs.
  • Ability to work both independently and in a team environment, to plan, organize and prioritize work.
  • Ability to collaborate and build strong working relationships with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.

Qualifications

A two-year (2) diploma in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, Justice Studies, Sociology, Psychology or any other related field, plus five (5) years of progressively responsible related experience or equivalent. 

Equivalency:
 

  • Directly related education or experience considered on the basis of 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
  • 1 year of experience for 1 year of education. 


Related experience for this position is defined as full-time experience conducting criminal investigations of firearm, illegal drug, or human trafficking offences in the capacity of police officer or peace officer.  

Required working knowledge:
 

  • Canadian Criminal Code of Canada and Justice System 
  • The following Acts: Firearms Act, Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and Identification of Criminals Act
  • Practices regarding search and seizure legislation and case law
  • All provincial statutes relating to traffic enforcement, alcohol and drugs, and provincial offence procedures


Assets:
 

  • Experience directly supervising police officers or peace officers primarily engaged in the criminal interdiction of firearms, drugs, or trafficking of persons
  • Leadership and supervisory skills, including mentoring and coaching to successfully lead staff, projects, working groups, committees and focus groups.
  • Experience developing policies and processes. 
  • Ability to interpret and apply legislative/regulatory training requirements to accreditation.

Notes

The position works 38.75 hours per week on average, following a schedule that includes day, evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.

This competition will be used to fill vacancies in Calgary (1) and Edmonton (1) immediately, and MAY be used to fill future vacancies in Medicine Hat (1), Lethbridge (3) and Burmis (Crowsnest Pass) (1) within the next six months.

Successful applicants for the Burmis location (only) may make application to the Chief Sheriff for reimbursement of relocation expenses up to a maximum of $10,000 as per the Sheriffs Branch policy on Personnel Relocation.
